What is carved

The life-size limestone boar was found with red, white and black pigment traces. Its surface also carries incised or carved details, including a chevron-like motif. The find was announced in September 2023. [1][2]

Interpretations

Scholarly consensus

Pigment traces show that at least some Göbekli Tepe sculptures were coloured; the statue’s original appearance is only partly preserved. [1][2]
