GGöbekli Tepe Visit

VISITOR QUESTIONS · RESEARCH CHECKED 2026-10-22

Visitor questions.

Answers from dated sources on hours, tickets, transport, climate, access and nearby places. Each answer stays within what the cited record supports.

How far is Göbekli Tepe from Şanlıurfa?

Sources put it about 15–18 km east or northeast of the city centre. These are stated distances, not a road-time estimate.

[1][2][3]
How long does the drive take?

I did not find a current official drive-time estimate. The published 15–18 km figures are not drive-time measurements; allow for the route and traffic shown by your current navigation app.

[1][2][3]
Can I get there without a car?

The municipality's page lists times at Şanlıurfa Museum, Abide and Göbeklitepe. It does not show a route number, fare or clearly labelled return timetable, so confirm with the municipality before travelling.

[2]
Which bus number goes to Göbekli Tepe, and what is the fare?

The municipality's accessible timetable page does not state a line number or fare. A separate older municipal notice calls the service route 100, but its schedule conflicts with the timetable page; do not assume that notice is current.

[2][4]
How far is GNY airport from the city?

Official sources list approximately 35–36 km between Şanlıurfa GAP Airport and Şanlıurfa. DHMİ identifies the airport as GNY.

[5][6][7]
What are Göbekli Tepe's opening hours?

The Ministry currently lists 08:30–17:30 daily, with the ticket office closing at 17:00. The extended 08:30–19:00 summer schedule applied from 25 April to 1 October 2026 and has ended.

[1][8]
How much do tickets cost?

The Ministry lists €20 for Göbeklitepe and €3 for the separate Canlandırma Merkezi. Its fee list shows Haleplibahçe Museum at €10 and a separate Şanlıurfa E Mozaik Müzesi line at €10 marked closed; the Ministry e-ticket interface lists a €10 archaeology-and-mosaic-museum pair. Karahantepe is listed free. A separate tariff table gives future rates from 1 April 2027; check the live tariff before buying.

[9][10][11]
Is MüzeKart valid at Göbekli Tepe?

The Ministry's page says MüzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens. Check card eligibility and current exceptions on the Ministry site.

[1]
How long should I spend at the site?

No official visit duration was found. Anadolu Agency reported that the walkways were expanded in 2026, so older estimates may not reflect the current route. Plan around your transport and the posted closing time.

[3][1][8]
When is the best time to visit?

MGM normals show much lower mean highs in spring and autumn than in July and August. This is a climate comparison, not an official recommendation; check the forecast close to travel.

[12][13]
Is there shade over the site?

DAI reports permanent protective roofs over the main excavation areas. The sources do not say that the entire visitor route is shaded.

[14]
Is Göbekli Tepe wheelchair accessible?

A 2026 report says the walkways were widened and made disability-friendly. It does not specify grades, uninterrupted step-free access, or accessible shuttle boarding; confirm those details with the museum before your visit.

[3][15]
Is Karahan Tepe open, and can I visit both sites in one day?

The Ministry page marks Karahantepe closed, while the Taş Tepeler project page says open. The straight-line separation from Göbekli Tepe is about 37.2 km, but that is not a road distance. Confirm status and transport before planning both in one day.

[16][17][1]
Can I take photographs or fly a drone?

The Ministry says requests to film or photograph at museums and archaeological sites are reviewed under its regulations. Its page does not state a personal-camera rule or a Göbeklitepe-specific drone rule; ask the museum before using filming equipment or flying a drone.

[18]
Is there a visitor-centre replica or audio guide?

The Ministry describes a Göbekli Tepe replica in a separate section and lists an audio-guide service. The replica centre has a separate ticket line from the archaeological site.

[1][9][10]
Where can I find a guide or driver?

The site's /guides page is an independent directory of local guide and driver listings. Listings are not endorsements; check availability and details with each business.

[19]
Where should I stay in Şanlıurfa?

The site's /guides page includes hotel listings for Şanlıurfa. Treat them as a starting point and confirm current facilities, rates and availability directly.

[19]
What can I visit nearby?

The Archaeology and Mosaic museums share a garden. The municipality describes Balıklıgöl and the historic covered bazaar district in the city; Harran is 44 km southeast, but the Ministry currently marks its archaeological site closed.

[20][21][22][5][23][9]
How old is Göbekli Tepe?

UNESCO describes the monuments as about 11,500 years old and dates them to between 9,600 and 8,200 BCE.
